Why invest in

Challenging Microaggressions?

Microaggressions (also known as micro-inequities and micro-incivilities) are:

  • everyday
  • verbal, nonverbal, and environmental slights, snubs, or insults,
  • whether intentional or unintentional,
  • which communicate hostile, derogatory, or negative messages to target persons,
  • particularly culturally marginalised groups.

The root of these behaviours is often not intentional and comes from unconscious and semiconscious biases, prejudices and stereotypes.

However, intent is not the same as impact!

Indeed, microaggressions have a major impact: they make people feel like they don't belong in your organisation.

That explains why research shows real and measurable impacts: both in terms of decreased mental and physical health as well as avoidance, absenteeism and mental exhaustion at work.

Programme

1: What are microaggressions?

  • The definition, origin and impact of microaggressions

  • How microaggressions are linked to our automatic system-1-thinking

    2: Microaggressions @work

    • Learning to recognize microaggressions @work
    • Accepting the important distinction between intention and impact

    3: Challenging microaggressions

We equip you with a series of practical tools and strategies to use in cases of microaggressions, be it:

    • as a target
    • as a witness or colleague
    • as a leader or manager
    • as a (often non-intentional) perpetrator

    4: Personal Action Plan

    • Of course, it all comes down to behavioural change @work.
    • This is why our training always incorporates a personal commitment to take action.
    • Your commitment takes the form of an "if-then"-plan (or implementation intention). Research shows the chances of actual behavioural change are multiplied doing this.

    Your results

    After this training, you will:

    • be able to identify microaggressions

    • be able to offer an understanding of why microaggressions are harmful, both to individual as well as collective well being

    • possess practical tools and strategies to respond to microaggressions, either as a target, witness/colleague or leader/manager

    Reviews

"A very engaging session of the effects of unconscious bias. Even in a large group the trainer manages to get participants to share their personal experiences with stereotypical thinking."
